Balboa Park (San Diego) with Small Children

Balboa Park in San Diego is a must see for any family. Adjacent to the famous San Diego Zoo the Park boasts running trails, multiple museums, and lots of restaurants and street vendors. The architecture is beautiful and the weather is almost always nice. People picnic, practice yoga, dance, and perform music for tips.

  1. Drive and park inside the park. GPS will take you to the edge of Balboa Park where it starts. Parents this is a vast park- it will save you a nice hike.
  2. Bring a change of clothes & coins because there are multiple water fountains children can dip their feet in and feel the water. Some even take wishes.
  3. Wear good shoes, bring snacks, and a picnic blanket. A stroller is a must. Locals love to picnic here. The abundance of fallen leaves from the plants kids pick up and play with. Ask lots of questions to your toddler- what do they love? Can they pick out the babies, grapes, or other shapes in the architecture.
  4. Check online for events taking place at Balboa Park. Summer concerts, December nights with Christmas skits including the Grinch who stole Christmas, and Parents night out at the Science Fleet Center where you drop of your children for a few hours and they learn about science and have fun. October is free kids month for San Diego Zoo. (Except during a pandemic).
  5. For low-income families with EBT most of the 17 museums in Balboa Park offers reduced prices, so there is something for everyone.

In the future I hope to do another post about everything there is to know about Balboa Park but since I am writing this while everything is still closed to visitors because of COVID concerns, it does make things a little more difficult.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

love, kc
